Sonic Unleashed

Sonic Unleashed

I really, really want to like Sonic Unleashed.

The game is split into two distinct gameplay styles. The day stages feature Sonic running fast and dodging hazards. The night stages see Sonic transform into the “werehog” and fighting a whole bunch of enemies. There’s a couple of flying stages thrown in too, although they’re reduced to QTE style events instead of the Panzer Dragoon style gameplay used in Sonic Adventure.

Day stages are a far too quick for my taste. The new boost mechanic allows Sonic to reach maximum speed by pressing a single button, rather than using the level itself to gain velocity. It’s fun to blast through levels, but it often feels like the gameplay has been reduced to holding the dash button. It’s a shame, because they look fantastic.

The night stages are fun in places, but they drag on for far too long. You might spend 5 minutes on a day stage and then 20 on the subsequent night stage. It doesn’t help that dodgy camera angles make jumping puzzles harder than they need to be and you’ll often die in completely unfair ways.

The imbalance in gameplay time really spoilt the game for me. I watched the leaked trailer so many times - seeing Sonic running through these fantastic looking levels really got me hyped for a great 3D platformer. Instead it feels like 90% of the game is spent slowly walking around punching things as the werehog, or wandering around trying to unlock enough medals to move to the next continent. When the day stages finally come along, the boost feature encourages you to blow right through them.

Even though it feels like two different games glued together, it’s an improvement over the mess of Sonic 2006. It’s just a shame they had to pad it out so much, especially when most of the padding is tedious and unpleasant to play.

Picked up a cheap copy of Titanfall 2 this week, and it’s been a big surprise so far. There have been some really inventive levels, and the enhanced movement makes them a lot of fun to navigate.

Super Mario Galaxy is really rather good. It’s a little different from other Mario games and takes a bit of getting used to, but I’m enjoying it so far.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

This is one of those games that I liked when I tried it out, but never really saw it as a “must-have”. Recently I picked up a copy and I’ve quite enjoyed it. It’s very similar to Mario Kart in places (drifting in particular), but it has some differences that make it worth trying.

As the title suggests, this isn’t just a Sonic racing game. There are courses from a diverse range of Sega titles, including Burning Rangers, NiGHTS and Skies of Arcadia. I love all three of those games and it’s nice to see they haven’t been forgotten completely.

The “transformed” part of the game is a nice twist on the standard kart racer. Vehicles morph between a car, boat, or plane depending on the course. On some stages this doesn’t really improve much, but others really make the most of it. The Panzer Dragoon course in particular uses all three vehicles well, with parts of the road crumbling and forcing you to take flight near the final lap.

The power-ups aren’t anything out of the ordinary. I do really like that the “swarm” attack can be dodged though. It’s much less frustrating to be hit by it than Mario Kart’s blue shell.

Career mode is pretty solid and has a variety of challenges to complement the standard races. Character and course unlocks require a set amount of stars, and each level level awards up to three stars depending on the difficulty chosen. The expert difficulty can be quite tough at times, but it never feels unfair.

Music is by Richard Jacques and suitably upbeat. It also has some nice callbacks to his work on Sonic R which is always a good thing.

I’m not a huge fan of kart racers, but I’m enjoying this so far.
