Big Walk - Day 4

Big Walk - Day 4

Interpretive dance quarterly.

So far we’ve had a pretty steady rhythm when we’ve played Big Walk - we do a little exploring, find some dog toys, and unlock a key.

To start the session we walked around the map for a while, climbing hills, jumping over obstacles, and firing far too many flares.

After half an hour or so we finally found a large open area linked to a room. The room we started in.

You may be asking “why didn’t you use the map?”. That’s because we went to the map room, picked up the map, and then promptly kicked it into the abyss.

Why?

Funny.

We went down to the beach and found some deckchairs next to a set of large speakers. We didn’t have a radio or walkie talkie to hook up to them, so we took turns sitting in the chairs and having the other person kick them. Also funny.

After some more walking we found our first new puzzle: a room full of switches. We found a second room nearby, but this one was full of lights that matched the position of the switches. We figured out that one of us would have to ask questions about the location of the light, and the other would have to answer using only a bulb that can be flashed on-and-off.

This was made slightly trickier as my mic cut out for a minute, but there was no way for James to tell me outside of frantically flickering the light (which I interpreted as a lot of yes/no answers).

Despite those hiccups we made it in the end and retrieved a purple dog toy.

Next we found a building with a bunch of small speakers on sticks that could be picked up. There was also a soundproof room with mounted speakers above several alcoves. The person in the soundproof room could hear sounds, and the person in the other room needed to find the appropriate speaker-stick and put it in the correct place.

This one was really fun - we developed a set of interpretive dances to describe each sound, grouped by what kind of sound they were (e.g. robotic, tweety, notification-like).

We got this on the first try which I think proves that we’re both amazing dancers.

We continued to explore, but it was getting dark so we sat down to chat about the week and what’s going on in our lives. We spent a good while just chatting and watching the sun rise and set.

The next puzzle room we found was a simple building with a few chairs and a large display on the wall. Activating the switch locked the door and started a 30 minute timer. So you just have to sit for 30 minutes and it will unlock the toy.

If only we’d found that before our outside chat. Oh well, that’s something for next week.

We carried on and found another obstacle course. This one was a little longer than last time and required carrying a timer through it.

The first attempt was not successful - mostly because I kicked the timer off the ledge - so we planned a proper route for the second try.

This went great until I threw the timer and missed the platform, so we ended up sprinting in panic to the goal. But we succeeded.

We spent the rest of the session looking for where to deposit the toys. We found another holster and a backpack, as well as a few more puzzles (which we skipped as we had our hands full), but nothing else.

We decided to ride the cable car to finish the session, and once we got to the top we found the tower to deposit our dog toys. Apparently we’d already dropped one off last week but forgot about it. Good work us.

We signed off with one toy needed to unlock the next key. Hopefully we remember where it goes next time.
